Since 1975, for more than twenty years, my academic work has fallen into the following areas. (1) Reinterpreting the history of classical scholarship: my monographs include Feng Fang and Yao Shilin, A Study of Ming Evidential Scholarship, Collected Papers on Ming Classical Studies, The Critical Study of the Classics in the Early Qing and Collected Papers on Qing Classical Studies. For the Republican period I have paid particular attention to the classical scholarship of Gu Jiegang and Xiong Shili.

(2) Compiling and editing research materials on the classics: I have compiled the Bibliography of Research on the Chinese Classics (1912–1987, 1988–1992 and 1993–1997), the Bibliography of Zhu Xi Studies, the Bibliography of Research on Qianlong–Jiaqing Scholarship, the Bibliography of Japanese Research on the Chinese Classics and the Bibliography of Japanese Research on Confucianism, and have also produced a newly collated edition of Zhu Yizun’s Jingyi kao.

(3) Translating Japanese works on the Chinese classics: completed translations include A History of Classical Scholarship, Modern Japanese Sinologists and A History of the Thought of the Analects, together with more than twenty individual articles.
