Event Report

A Two-Way Dialogue between Authors and Reviewers

Event Report · May 14, 2026

Graduate students in Chinese studies who set out to publish often face the same difficulties: little experience with submission, reviewers’ comments that are hard to decode, and uncertainty about how to revise. This forum was built around a roundtable dialogue that brought together the perspectives of both authors and reviewers, inviting senior scholars and doctoral students with publishing experience to share practical experience and make explicit the tacit knowledge of academic publishing. The event was held in a hybrid format, in person and online, so that faculty and graduate students in Taiwan and abroad could all take part.

In the first session three doctoral students shared their experience as authors. Wang Cheng-yu argued that graduate students should build the habit of submitting regularly and treat rejection as an opportunity to improve a paper. Yen Hao-jan described the shift in mindset from graduate conferences to journal submission, proposing three habits of self-discipline: asking and answering one’s own questions, checking one’s own formatting, and making good use of advisers’ comments. Yang Cho-kang, speaking from the viewpoint of a master’s student, suggested selecting the best of one’s course papers to rework for submission, and cited Academician Chu’s Ten Letters to Young Seekers of Knowledge in encouraging students to face rejection with equanimity.

In the second session five faculty members spoke from the reviewer’s side. Yeh Jui-chen, under the title “Empathy and Dialogue: The Multiple Meanings of Review,” argued that self-review before writing is in fact a threefold dialogue with oneself, with one’s subject and with one’s ideal reader. Cho Min-woo, joining online from Korea, spoke on “Emotional Management for the Outward-Facing World and the Inward-Facing Researcher,” reminding participants that writing is an act of persuasion. Wu Pei-hsun focused on format and structure, pointing out conventions of punctuation, differences in title marks across the Strait, and the use of Word’s tools. Director Tsai Ying-ying shared concrete strategies for “revise and resubmit”: respond to every comment specifically, mark each revision, support any disagreement with evidence, and never reveal the adviser’s name, so as to protect double-blind review. Cheng Kat-hung concluded with the fundamental meaning of the review system as a mechanism by which knowledge advances collectively, urging that scholars respond substantively to reviewers while maintaining courtesy, and offering concrete examples on principles for reading sources and reviewing the literature.

The general discussion touched on when to thank anonymous reviewers, how to read the polite phrasing of reviewers’ comments, and how to weigh rejection when submitting across disciplines, with the moderator and Professor Cheng adding further remarks. The forum concluded in a warm and collegial atmosphere.

Conference Report

Grand Opening of the Conference on Confucianism and Language

Opening Address by Dean Yeh Chien-te · November 17, 2014

President Tai, Chair Chang, Director Wu, distinguished guests, Professor Li Huayong and Professor Qi Xueying of the College of International Cultural Exchange, Central China Normal University, colleagues and students: good morning!

The Conference on Confucianism and Language opens today in our International Conference Hall. We warmly welcome all of you who have come to take part, and especially our two guests from the College of Liberal Arts of Central China Normal University, who have travelled a long way to be here.

The University’s Research Center for Confucian Studies was established in June 2008, in accordance with Mayor Hau Lung-pin’s campaign white paper, with the following aims:

  1. 1. To promote research on Confucianism in Taiwan and enhance humanities education grounded in the classics.
  2. 2. To integrate Confucian culture with modern society, bringing Confucianism into everyday life and making it accessible to the public.
  3. 3. To organize academic activities related to Confucian studies and publish related works.
  4. 4. To train primary and secondary school teachers and put the promotion of Confucian education into practice.

Since its founding the Center has operated with funding from the Taipei City Government. Under the leadership of its two successive directors, Chang Hsiao-sheng and Wu Chao-chia, it has carried out many activities: the Conference on Confucianism and Language, the Taipei Confucian Lecture, the Confucian Classics Reading Group, the publication of the Confucian Studies Series and an e-newsletter. It has spared no effort in research and outreach, with very fruitful results. The Center’s funding, however, has decreased year by year, and we hope the City Government will continue its support so that we can work together for the promotion of Confucianism.

Today’s program comprises six panels and sixteen papers, covering Confucian studies, philosophy, calendrics, philology, literature, Chinese language teaching and cross-cultural studies. It is a rich and varied feast of Confucianism and language.

We are also delighted that two professors from Central China Normal University, Professor Li Huayong and Professor Qi Xueying, have joined us from the mainland. We welcome this academic exchange between our two universities and look forward to deepening our scholarly ties and friendship.

My thanks to Director Wu of the Center and Chair Chang of the Department of Chinese for organizing the conference, and to the student team led by Wu Chia-ming and Chiang Chia-lun for their help.

I wish the conference every success, and all of you good health and every happiness.
